91.- Sneakers in the sky

2013 04 01 Shoes C

Hanging the worn sneakers over the light cables could be, I guess, a way to extend its life, a tribute by the KM that have been walked with them……….but it is surely just a teenage prank.

  1. Funny you should share this picture and your thoughts. I am reminded of my oldest son and my nephew and the sneakers hanging on the line outside my back door. I had thought it a kid prank and to my surprise I learned a few days after they got mysteriously placed there the significance. I lived in Wallington , N.J. at the time and the two young men were Juniors in High School. I worked in Manhattan and one day a few days after the sneakers appeared I got a phone call as I was entering the Lincoln Tunnel from my then sister in law. She expressed that I should get home right away and that there was a problem… Half of the kids from the High School were lined up from my back door to the corner of the block. The shoes were a sign to the local teens that there were items that could be purchased of an illegal nature you know Mary Jane and cocaine along with a magic mushroom or two. After making those boys flush there product or take me and one of my detective friends to the guy they got it from I called the town and had them taken down! Sometimes those little teen pranks aren’t what you think! Nice post and a great pic! 🙂

  3. I first noticed this sneakers in the air phenomenon in Brussels. In fact, there is a pair that has been hanging outside my office window for over a year now! There’s an interesting article on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoe_tossing) about this. Quite interesting to see the different reasonings behind it!

  4. Eeeeyep! The popular notion that shoes up on a wire or in a tree is a sign that a drug dealer operates in the area is actually an urban myth of which the origin is still quite unclear. Police and cultural anthropologists all around the world have confirmed it. Narcotics trafficers use other ways to advertise, and they unfortunately do it far more effectively than this way.

This worldwide phenomenon that seems to have only been around withing the last decade or so has actually been practiced for generations. It’s called shoe tossing. Here’s a Wikipedia article on it:

It’s a great source of creative photography:
